January 4th, 1999 – The Final Nail(s) in WCW’s Coffin… The Fingerpoke of Doom
26 years ago today, Mankind defeated The Rock in a no-disqualification match to win the WWF Championship. This historic victory, aided by interference from Stone Cold Steve Austin, was part of a pre-taped Raw that aired against WCW Nitro.

Earlier that night, WCW commentator Tony Schiavone, under instructions from Eric Bischoff, mocked Mankind’s win, announcing, “Fans, as Hollywood Hogan walks away and you look at this 40,000 plus on hand, if you're even thinking about changing the channel to our competition, fans, do not, because we understand that Mick Foley, who wrestled here one time as Cactus Jack, is going to win their world title. Ha! That's gonna put some butts in the seats, heh!”

The result? An estimated 600,000 viewers switched from Nitro to Raw, marking a decisive shift in the Monday Night Wars.

Meanwhile, on Nitro, Hulk Hogan became the new WCW Champion after pinning Kevin Nash in the now-infamous ‘Fingerpoke of Doom.’ This controversial moment, coupled with the mishandling of Goldberg’s storyline, alienated fans and symbolized the beginning of WCW’s decline. Together, these events marked one of the most significant nights in wrestling history. The final ratings for the night were 5.7 for Raw is War and 5.0 for Nitro. One year later the January 3rd, 2000 episode of Nitro drew a 3.3 rating against Raw with 6.4. The Monday Night Wars was over.
