January 16, 2000 - Souled Out Shocker Ends in Controversy
25 years ago today, WCW presented the Souled Out PPV live from Cincinnati, Ohio. The main event saw Chris Benoit defeat Sid Vicious to win the WCW World Heavyweight Title, despite management knowing Benoit planned to leave the company the next day. WCW hoped the title win would convince him to stay, but Benoit relinquished the belt and departed for the WWF due to disputes with management.
The following night on Nitro, WCW (kayfabe) stripped Benoit of the title, citing Sid's foot being under the rope during the submission hold. While WCW refused to recognize Benoit's reign, the WWF later acknowledged it after acquiring the championship rights in 2001.
