January 18, 1971 - Bruno’s 2,803-Day Historic Reign Ends in Shock

54 years ago today, the longest championship reign in WWF (then WWWF) history came to an end at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Ivan Koloff defeated Bruno Sammartino to conclude Bruno’s monumental 2,803-day reign as champion.

Koloff, who admitted he was largely unknown before this victory, described the deafening silence in the arena after his win: “I thought something happened to my ears.” Bruno reflected on the emotional reaction of fans, with many crying and expressing their love for him: “That’s what made me feel bad. I had made them feel so sad.”

Koloff’s reign was short-lived, serving as a transitional champion before Pedro Morales claimed the title three weeks later. To put Bruno’s feat in perspective, Roman Reigns’ current record-breaking run of 1,316 days is more than four years shorter.

Imagine the picture below but it happened 4 years later, at Wrestlemania 44, in 2028!

WWE SmackDown aired live from the Pechanga Center in San Diego, California.

  • Rey Mysterio Declares for the Royal Rumble
    Rey Mysterio kicked off SmackDown by declaring himself for the Royal Rumble, reflecting on his historic 2006 win. Kevin Owens interrupted, expressing his admiration for Rey but staking his claim as the rightful WWE Champion. Tensions escalated as Rey called Owens delusional, and Owens narrowly avoided a 619 before retreating.

  • Bianca Belair & Naomi def. Candice LeRae & Nia Jax
    Bianca and Naomi overcame the formidable team of LeRae and Jax in a non-title match. Naomi pinned LeRae with a full nelson bomb after a hard-fought contest.

  • Solo Sikoa’s Ominous Message
    Solo Sikoa made his return and took the mic, letting the crowd’s boos echo before dropping a cryptic message: silence. He then walked out, leaving the audience and his potential rivals guessing.

  • Jacob Fatu Sends a Warning
    Following Sikoa’s silent exit, Jacob Fatu grabbed a mic and declared his dominance, dismissing the crowd’s reaction and promising that he’s “just getting started.”

  • LA Knight and Braun Strowman Stir the Chaos
    LA Knight blindsided Fatu and Tama Tonga mid-promo, igniting a brawl. The duo quickly overwhelmed Knight until Braun Strowman arrived to even the odds. Strowman and Fatu squared off briefly before Tonga pulled Fatu to safety.

  • “Big” Jim Uso def. Carmelo Hayes by DQ
    Uso and Hayes battled in a competitive match that ended in disqualification after interference from Tama Tonga and Jacob Fatu, who attacked Uso post-match, leaving him laid out.

  • Motor City Machine Guns def. Los Garza
    Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin defeated Angel Garza and Humberto Carrillo in a back-and-forth tag match. Pretty Deadly attempted interference, but the Guns capitalized on the chaos, hitting Skull & Bones on Carrillo for the victory.

  • Piper Niven def. B-FAB
    Piper Niven overpowered B-FAB, winning with the Piper Driver. After the match, Mia Yim ran in to save B-FAB from further assault by Niven and Chelsea Green.

  • Tiffany Stratton def. Bayley to retain the WWE Women’s Championship
    In the main event, Tiffany Stratton retained her title against Bayley in a hard-fought battle. Roxanne Perez, seated at ringside, briefly distracted Bayley, leading to a chaotic finish. Stratton sealed her win with the Prettiest Moonsault Ever, continuing her reign as Women’s Champion.
