🗓️ On This Day

January 23, 1984 - Hulkamania is Born!

41 years ago today, Hulk Hogan defeated The Iron Sheik at Madison Square Garden to capture his first WWF Championship, igniting the era of Hulkamania. The match saw Hogan become the first wrestler to escape The Iron Sheik’s signature Camel Clutch, securing victory in just 5 minutes and 40 seconds (talk about a 5+ star match).

This historic bout came just a month after The Iron Sheik controversially ended Bob Backlund’s six-year title reign. While Backlund was slated for a rematch, an injury opened the door for Hogan to step in and seize his moment.

Hogan’s first championship reign lasted over four years and coincided with the WWF’s meteoric rise. Under Vince McMahon’s leadership, WrestleMania debuted in 1985, with Hogan headlining eight of the first nine WrestleMania events, solidifying his place as the face of the golden age of professional wrestling.
