Super Bowl Halftime Goes Hardcore

26 years ago today, the inaugural WWF Halftime Heat aired during the halftime of the NFL Super Bowl on USA Network. As a counter-programming effort to the Super Bowl halftime show, the broadcast featured a single but highly memorable match: an Empty Arena Match between Mankind and The Rock for the WWF Championship.

Taped earlier in the day at the Tucson Convention Center in Arizona, the match showcased chaos in an environment devoid of fans, with Mankind and The Rock brawling through the concession stands, backstage areas, and even a loading dock. Mankind ultimately secured victory after using a forklift to pin The Rock, winning his second WWF Championship in iconic fashion.

WWF Halftime Heat would return two more times: once in 2000 and again in 2019 as a special event on the WWE Network, YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter. The concept remains a legendary example of WWE's innovation during the Attitude Era.
