Cena Shocks the Garden in a Royal Rumble Comeback

17 years ago today, the WWE Royal Rumble took place at Madison Square Garden in New York City. John Cena made a shocking return as the surprise 30th entrant, months ahead of schedule after recovering from a torn pectoral muscle. Cena quickly cleared the ring, leaving himself, Batista, and Triple H as the final three. Ultimately, Cena eliminated The Game to claim victory and punch his ticket to WrestleMania.

Elsewhere on the card, Edge retained the World Heavyweight Championship by defeating Rey Mysterio, while Randy Orton successfully defended the WWE Championship against Jeff Hardy in a hard-fought match.
