Asuka and Rousey Make Royal Rumble History

7 years ago today, WWE made history at the Royal Rumble event held at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The night featured the first-ever Women’s Royal Rumble match, won by Asuka. Following the match, Raw Women’s Champion Alexa Bliss and SmackDown Women’s Champion Charlotte Flair confronted Asuka, who was interrupted by the surprise debut of Ronda Rousey.

Rousey, wearing a jacket that belonged to her idol Roddy Piper, pointed to the WrestleMania sign and offered a handshake to Asuka, who refused. She then shook hands with Raw Commissioner Stephanie McMahon, closing out the event and confirming her full-time signing with WWE.

Earlier in the night, Shinsuke Nakamura eliminated Roman Reigns to win the Men’s Royal Rumble, and The Bar (Sheamus and Cesaro) captured the Raw Tag Team Championships by defeating Jason Jordan and Seth Rollins. Unfortunately, this match marked Jason Jordan’s final in-ring performance due to a career-ending neck injury.

WWE Raw Results – January 27th, 2025

WWE Raw was live on Netflix from the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia.

• Seth Rollins, GUNTHER, and Logan Paul Segment
  Seth Rollins opened the show, declaring his intent to win the Royal Rumble and teasing challenges for either GUNTHER’s World Heavyweight Championship or Cody Rhodes’ WWE Championship at WrestleMania. GUNTHER interrupted, dismissing Rollins' claims and reaffirming his dominance as the top wrestler in WWE for 2025. Logan Paul joined the segment, announcing his entry into the Royal Rumble and claiming he is WWE’s next breakout star.

• Cathy Kelley Interviews CM Punk

• The War Raiders (c) def. The Judgment Day – World Tag Team Championship Match

• Zelina Vega Moves to SmackDown
  WWE announced that Zelina Vega will join SmackDown as part of the ongoing WWE Transfer Window, which concludes this weekend.

• Rey Mysterio def. Xavier Woods
  Rey Mysterio picked up the win against Xavier Woods after a fast-paced match, ending with a 619 and Frog Splash. Woods, frustrated by his family arriving late to the arena, couldn’t keep his focus against the LWO leader.

• Jey Uso Promo
  Jey Uso energized the Atlanta crowd with his determination to win the Royal Rumble and take the World Heavyweight Championship from GUNTHER at WrestleMania.

• Liv Morgan & Raquel Rodriguez def. Bianca BelAir & Naomi
  Morgan and Rodriguez secured the victory after Dominik Mysterio’s interference caused Naomi to lose focus. Rodriguez’s Tejana Bomb and Morgan’s CodeBreaker proved decisive in the win.

• Cathy Kelley Interviews Rhea Ripley
  Rhea Ripley reflected on her recent victory over Nia Jax and vowed to brutalize whoever challenges her at WrestleMania. Bayley, last year’s Royal Rumble winner, interrupted and hinted at a potential clash. Iyo Sky also threw her hat into the ring for the Rumble.

• PENTA Promo
  PENTA declared his entry into the Royal Rumble with bold promises to make his WrestleMania moment a reality, emphasizing his “Cero Miedo” mantra.

• Paul Heyman and Drew McIntyre Segment
  Paul Heyman hyped Roman Reigns’ dominance and Royal Rumble entry, but Drew McIntyre interrupted to confront Heyman. McIntyre taunted Heyman about his role in The Bloodline’s success and vowed to eliminate Roman Reigns from the Rumble.

• Drew McIntyre def. Sami Zayn

McIntyre and Owens, meanwhile, laughed at the discord they had sown before leaving the ring.
