Vince Destroys His Quads, Batista Wins the Rumble

20 years ago today, WWE’s Royal Rumble took place at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, California, and delivered one of the most infamous finishes in Rumble history. Batista emerged victorious, but not without controversy.

The final four came down to Batista, John Cena, Edge, and Rey Mysterio. Edge speared Mysterio and eliminated him before Batista and Cena teamed up to take out Edge. The two rising stars then battled one-on-one, with Cena attempting an FU, only for Batista to counter. Batista went for a Batista Bomb, but Cena reversed with a headscissors takedown—sending both men tumbling over the top rope and hitting the floor at the exact same time.

Confusion broke out as Raw referees declared Batista the winner, while SmackDown officials sided with Cena. To settle the dispute, WWE Chairman Vince McMahon stormed to the ring—only to immediately tear a quad muscle upon entering. Attempting to stand, he then tore his other quad, leaving him barking orders from the mat in visible pain.

In the end, the match was restarted, and Batista quickly eliminated Cena to officially win the Royal Rumble as originally planned.

Also on the card, JBL retained the WWE Championship in a Triple Threat Match against Kurt Angle and Big Show thanks to interference from The Cabinet, while Triple H successfully defended the World Heavyweight Championship against his former Evolution stablemate, Randy Orton.

Claudio then hit two Neutralizers to secure the win. After the match, MJF knocked out Jarrett with the Dynamite Diamond Ring and mockingly told him he “respects his elders.”

A high-speed contest saw Fox hit a 450 Splash for a near fall. Ricochet fought back with a Codebreaker and finished Fox with Vertigo. • Jay White def. Wheeler Yuta
Yuta worked over White’s leg, hitting a Spinning Toe Hold and an Arm-Trapped Olympic Slam for two. White fought back, dodging a Busaiku Knee and hitting the Bladerunner for the win. He delivered a second Bladerunner post-match before Jon Moxley and Claudio attacked him. RatedFTR made the save, and Dax Harwood challenged Moxley’s group to a Mid-South Street Fight on Collision.

PWInsider reports that WWE Chief Content Officer Paul "Triple H" Levesque will headline the 2025 WWE Hall of Fame class. Despite his prominent role in running WWE’s creative direction, Levesque was reportedly caught off guard by the decision. "The announcement was revealed to him today in a meeting by his wife, Stephanie McMahon, and fellow Hall of Famers Undertaker and Shawn Michaels," PWInsider stated.

With WWE’s ongoing partnership with TNA, rumors continue to swirl about TNA Champion Joe Hendry possibly appearing in the Royal Rumble. Addressing speculation, Hendry said, "If you've been in two Royal Rumbles, come on. Anything is possible. But ultimately, here's the difference. Before, hey, I was a wrestler. But now, I am the TNA Champion. So I have a duty to do what's best for TNA wrestling... If TNA management tells me to go, I'm going to, and whatever it is, I'm going to represent the company well."

Alexa Bliss, who has been absent from WWE programming for months, sent fans into a frenzy with a cryptic post just days before the Royal Rumble. While the message didn’t explicitly hint at a return, speculation is running rampant that she may make a surprise appearance in the women’s Rumble match.

From Batista and John Cena’s infamous 2005 Royal Rumble double elimination (and Vince McMahon tearing both quads) to fan backlash over Roman Reigns’ 2015 win, Wrestling Inc. takes a look at some of the most controversial moments in Royal Rumble history.

According to reports The Wyatt Sicks have been kept off of TV due to injuries.

Jon Moxley spoke with Renee Paquette about the purpose behind his faction, the Death Riders, and how AEW’s identity has shifted since its inception. "The Death Riders believe in the original vision of AEW, which is raw competition between the best wrestlers in the world," Moxley explained. "As AEW grew, positions were filled with people who are not good enough. The result is watering down that vision." His words have fueled debate among fans about AEW’s current direction.

Chris Jericho addressed rumors surrounding Britt Baker’s AEW future, as speculation has swirled about her potentially leaving the company. Jericho shut down the idea, stating, "So I don’t see her leaving or going anywhere. And I’m looking forward to having her come back on the show, because she has a great character, a great presence, and, once again, a great fanbase within AEW and within the wrestling world."
