The Night 33 Million Watched Hulk Hogan Get Screwed

37 years ago today, WWF The Main Event aired live from the Market Square Arena in Indianapolis, Indiana, making history as the first prime-time wrestling show on network television since 1955. A staggering 33 million people tuned in—still the most-watched wrestling broadcast in U.S. history—to witness Hulk Hogan defend the WWF Championship against Andre the Giant in a highly anticipated WrestleMania III rematch.

Andre, accompanied by ā€œThe Million Dollar Manā€ Ted DiBiase and Virgil, faced Hogan in a bout that would become infamous for its controversial finish. The match’s assigned referee was supposed to be Dave Hebner, but thanks to DiBiase’s underhanded tactics, Dave’s identical twin brother Earl Hebner—making his WWF debut—secretly officiated instead. Bought off by DiBiase, Earl counted a fast, blatantly incorrect three-count, awarding Andre the win despite Hogan’s shoulders being up at two.

This marked Andre’s first and only WWF singles title reign, which lasted an astonishing… 108 seconds. Immediately after winning, Andre handed the championship over to DiBiase, revealing he, too, had been bought off. However, WWF President Jack Tunney declared the title vacant just days later on WWF Superstars, stating the championship couldn’t simply be handed from one wrestler to another.

Tunney announced a tournament would be held at WrestleMania IV to crown an undisputed champion, setting the stage for a new era in WWF history. It’s also worth noting that this loss ended Hulk Hogan’s legendary 1,474-day title reign—just over four years—cementing the night’s significance as one of wrestling’s most shocking betrayals.

Yesterday the Netflix boos couldn’t hold back #1 Hulk Hogan from moving on. It would’ve been quite the surprise to see a #16 seed upset this early, but if it was going to happen in any era this era seemed the most likely. Moving on to today’s poll.

The eerie broadcast interruption included distorted visuals and brief flashes of unidentifiable symbols, leaving fans buzzing about what’s to come in NXT.

On WWE Raw, Seth Rollins delivered a scathing promo that subtly signaled a heel turn. He mocked CM Punk and Roman Reigns while manipulating Sami Zayn, showcasing a more devious side of his character.

Roman Reigns is reportedly out of action for the foreseeable future following a brutal attack at the Royal Rumble.

AEW

Jeff Jarrett shared candid thoughts on MJF’s obsession with the AEW World Title, revealing, "But look, if you guys think that MJF, if you think this is strictly storyline purposes, you don’t know MJF. Go ask him, maybe more importantly, go ask the people around him how fixated he is on the AEW World Title. Does he truly believe he could be a one-hit wonder? There’s no doubt in my mind. I got that from him. Just the off-handed talks that I’ve had with him through the last year or so." Jarrett’s comments highlight MJF’s intense drive both on and off-screen.

Elijah has stirred the rumor mill after posting a cryptic vignette alongside AEW’s tag team The Righteous Ones. The dark, ominous teaser hints at a potential new faction or storyline debut, leaving fans eager to see what’s next for this intriguing alliance.
