Shawn Michaels Vacates the WWF Championship & "Loses His Smile"

28 years ago today, WWF Raw aired a special Thursday edition from Lowell, Massachusetts, where WWF World Heavyweight Champion Shawn Michaels vacated the title in an emotional, tearful speech. Claiming he had suffered a knee injury, Michaels announced he was stepping away from wrestling, saying he had "lost his smile" and needed time to find himself.

At the time, many speculated that Michaels vacated the title to avoid dropping it at WrestleMania 13, where Bret Hart was penciled in to regain the championship he had lost the previous year. The move only escalated the real-life tension between Michaels and Hart, with many in Hart’s camp believing that if Michaels was healthy enough to cut a promo, he was healthy enough to lose the title in the ring.

With Michaels vacating the belt, the upcoming Final Four PPV, originally set to determine a No. 1 contender, was instead changed to a match for the vacant title, featuring Bret Hart, Steve Austin, Vader, and The Undertaker.

Elsewhere on the show, Rocky Maivia won his first WWF championship, defeating Hunter Hearst Helmsley for the WWF Intercontinental Title. This victory marked the beginning of what would become one of the most legendary careers in wrestling history.

AEW Dynamite Results - February 12th, 2025

AEW Dynamite was taped from the H-E-B Center in Austin, Texas, featuring the buildup to AEW Grand Slam Australia.

  • "Best Wrestler Alive" Open Challenge – Adam Page def. Max Caster
    Max Caster attempted to escape the match, but Adam Page tracked him down and dominated. After a series of lariats, Page hit the Buckshot Lariat to secure the victory.

  • Ricochet’s Message to Swerve
    Backstage, Ricochet dismissed the fan backlash and mocked Swerve Strickland, claiming he was "moving on to bigger and better things" after his win last week.

  • AEW World Trios Championship (Tony remembered these belts) – The Death Riders def. The Undisputed Kingdom
    A chaotic bout saw both teams trading control, with Adam Cole leading a comeback for his team. However, Wheeler Yuta used a low blow and a roll-up to steal the victory for The Death Riders. Post-match, Daniel Garcia and company ran in to chase off the Death Riders.

  • MJF’s Warning to Dustin Rhodes
    MJF insulted Texas and vowed to defeat Dustin Rhodes later in the night. Adam Page interrupted, continuing their ongoing tension.

  • Samoa Joe, HOOK, & Shibata def. Cruz, Solo, & Grillo
    The trio dominated their opponents, with Samoa Joe finishing the match with a Muscle Buster. Afterward, Joe called out Christian Cage and the Patriarchy for a match next week.

  • Chris Jericho Challenges Bandido
    Jericho and Bryan Keith ambushed Bandido before a scheduled showdown, but Powerhouse Hobbs made a shocking return to save Bandido and take down Big Bill.

  • Cope & Jay White Steal Moxley’s Briefcase
    Backstage, Cope attacked Jon Moxley and, with Jay White's help, stole his chained briefcase containing the AEW World Championship.

  • MJF def. Dustin Rhodes
    Rhodes put up a strong fight, nearly winning after hitting Cross Rhodes. However, MJF survived, applied the Salt of the Earth armbar, and won by referee stoppage. Post-match, Adam Page stormed the ring, leading to a wild brawl between him and MJF that spilled into the crowd.

  • Tony Khan Announces MJF vs. Hangman Page Face-to-Face Next Week
    After the brawl, Tony Khan officially booked a confrontation between MJF and Adam Page for next week's Dynamite.

  • Swerve Strickland’s Heated Words for Ricochet
    Swerve, frustrated by Ricochet’s actions, vowed to end their feud once and for all.

  • Megan Bayne def. Maya World
    Bayne dominated in a short match, finishing Maya with an F5. Afterward, she confronted Kris Statlander, hinting at a future showdown.

  • Kris Statlander def. Penelope Ford
    After a competitive match, Statlander hit the Wednesday Night Fever to secure the win. Post-match, Megan Bayne attacked Statlander, leaving her laid out.

    Bobby Lashley and Shelton Benjamin retained their titles after Lashley speared Austin Gunn, followed by Shelton scoring the pin. Post-match, Brian Cage and Lance Archer taunted the champions.

  • Cope & Jay White Challenge Moxley
    In the main event segment, Cope threatened to smash open Moxley’s stolen briefcase unless Moxley accepted his challenge for Revolution. Moxley stormed the ring and agreed to defend the AEW World Championship. However, a brawl erupted, with Cope and Jay White gaining the upper hand. Jay White then announced that at Grand Slam Australia, the Death Riders would face Cope and White’s faction in a high-stakes battle.

Chad Gable is eager to prove himself as a singles champion in WWE. "...I will be very disappointed if I don't deliver. I'm a goal guy. I'm a goal-driven guy. I'm interested to see what I will do, on top of everything else I do, to try to make that happen or force it to happen. I know I'm ready. I can carry a title." Gable’s strong performances in recent months have fueled speculation that WWE could soon put gold around his waist.

Paul Heyman officially revealed WWE 2K25’s new Island Mode, a multiplayer online experience where players can interact with up to 50 others in a WWE-themed world. "With The Island, players enter an online environment filled with WWE-themed landmarks, quests, live events, and shops with up to 50 other players at a time. The Island also offers deep customization, giving players the chance to personalize their MySuperstars like never before. As the first of its kind for the franchise, The Island is not just an addition; it's a bold step toward the future," Heyman stated.

Ricky Starks has officially arrived in WWE, but instead of heading straight to the main roster, he made his debut in NXT. "Those who have followed Starks' career believe that he is ready for the WWE main roster already, but according to WWE sources, he debuted in 'NXT' because a number of creative plans have already been put in place for WrestleMania 41, while 'NXT' would be 'more fluid' in working Starks into their creative plans."

A lawsuit has been filed against Hulk Hogan’s Real American Beer, with allegations that the company’s negligence led to an injury. Details surrounding the case remain limited, but the lawsuit adds another legal issue to Hogan’s history of business ventures.

Chris Jericho pushed back against speculation that he has excessive creative control in AEW. "I don’t choose anything. I might have a suggestion, but most of the time it’s Tony coming up with who he wants me to work with... But most of the time, this whole thing that started working with Rated FTR, that was Tony’s idea. So yeah, I still work for my boss, and I have never once as far as I can remember in the six years I’ve been in AEW ever said no to something."

Keith Lee has denied recent reports regarding his AEW appearances, stating that speculation about his role in the company is inaccurate. While Lee remains part of AEW’s roster, his exact creative direction moving forward remains unclear.

The Jim Johnston formula is tried and true:

- Introductory Sound Effect (Known as a “stinger”, such as SCSA’s glass shatter, DX’s two-beat knock, or Y2J’s countdown sound.)

- High BPM Hard Rock / Metal, Anthemic, Electronic, or Rhythmic melody. Modern Hip-Hop/Rap doesn’t work as well because the production is too slowed-down, emotional…

- Occasional catch phrase used as an ad-lib on the track (such as Booker T. Shouting “Can You Dig It? SUCKKKAAA” in the background of his song (yes, I know it was before his time in WWE), or The Rock saying “Do you smell what the Rock is cookin’?” in the background of his song).

- Every now and then a slower song such as Gangrel’s iconic theme, or Kane’s, or Godfather’s can work if the theme has brilliant instrumentation or a catchy groove that the audience can vibe to. Undertaker is the true outlier, but it works because it went perfectly with the production of his lighting effects as he walked to the ring, and the overall persona of his character.

Hopefully we can move away from the low-energy slop we’ve been forced to accept lately (with the exception of Jey Uso, Rhea Ripley, Seth Rollins, etc)...
