🗓️ On This Day - 1997

Bret Hart Wins the WWF Championship at Final Four

28 years ago today, Bret Hart won his fourth WWF World Championship in the main event of In Your House: Final Four in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The match featured Bret Hart, The Undertaker, Vader, and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, who had controversially won the 1997 Royal Rumble after re-entering the match illegally.

Originally, the bout was meant to determine the No. 1 contender for WrestleMania 13, but after Shawn Michaels vacated the WWF Championship just days earlier, the stakes were raised, and the match was made for the vacant title. Hart outlasted his three opponents, eliminating The Undertaker last to reclaim the championship.

The night also saw the debut of Chyna, who appeared as a planted fan at ringside and attacked Marlena during a six-man tag team match involving Goldust. This was the beginning of Chyna’s legendary run in WWE.

Elsewhere on the card, Rocky Maivia retained his newly-won Intercontinental Championship against Hunter Hearst Helmsley, continuing his early momentum in what would become a Hall of Fame career.

WWE

Ricky Starks made waves during an NXT promo where he addressed his past, seemingly alluding to his AEW departure. While Starks didn’t name AEW outright, the promo strongly hinted at frustrations with his previous company, and fans are already buzzing about how WWE will position him going forward.

Former WWE Intercontinental Champion Santino Marella made a surprise appearance at NXT Vengeance Day, bringing his signature humor to the show. Great to see Santino in a quick cameo like this but he brings back memories of how bad WWE Creative used to be in the early 2010s!

“Oh you didn’t know…” WWE has reportedly named Road Dogg as the new Co-Lead Writer for SmackDown. The move sees the WWE Hall of Famer taking on a more significant creative role, potentially shaping the blue brand’s direction heading into WrestleMania 41.

AEW

Tony Khan faced an unexpected reaction at AEW Grand Slam Australia, as fans in attendance loudly booed him during his in-ring segment.

Bully Ray discussed how he would collaborate with Tony Khan on AEW’s creative direction, saying, "I would never want Tony Khan to relinquish his part in creative. I would want to work with Tony Khan on creative," Ray clarified. "Tony Khan is a matchmaker. What I would do with Tony is sit down at a table with Tony, and I would go, 'Tony, give me your top three fantasy matches that you want to do in three months, six months, a year.' And when he hands me those fantasy matches, I'll build stories around them. That's how you work together...I would never suggest that Tony Khan give up the pencil completely."
