JBL Survives Barbed Wire Cage Match at No Way Out

20 years ago today, John “Bradshaw” Layfield defended the WWE Championship against The Big Show in a brutal Barbed Wire Steel Cage match at No Way Out 2005. The cage, wrapped in barbed wire, prevented escape, forcing both men to battle it out inside the unforgiving structure.

JBL, who had reigned as champion for over 240 days, found himself overmatched by Big Show’s sheer power. However, in classic JBL fashion, he managed to escape with his title—literally. After being chokeslammed through the ring canvas, JBL crawled out underneath the structure to retain his championship, leaving Big Show furious as the pay-per-view went off the air.

Elsewhere on the card:

  • Eddie Guerrero & Rey Mysterio defeated Doug & Danny Basham to win the WWE Tag Team Championship.

  • Chavo Guerrero won the Cruiserweight Open, capturing the WWE Cruiserweight Title in a match featuring some of the best high-flyers of the era.

JBL’s controversial win further cemented his status as WWE’s top heel, setting the stage for his eventual clash with John Cena at WrestleMania 21.

AEW Dynamite

AEW Dynamite Results - February 19th, 2025

AEW Dynamite aired live from the Arizona Financial Theatre in Phoenix, Arizona, on TBS and streamed on Max, featuring a major confrontation between MJF and Hangman Page, a wild Street Fight, and big developments for AEW Revolution.

  • MJF and Hangman Page face off
MJF opened the show, reminding Hangman that he cost him the Casino Battle Royal in 2019 and claiming he clawed his way to the top, unlike Page, who was the “chosen one.” Page fired back, saying he has always faced his problems head-on, unlike MJF, who has spent years scheming and cheating his way to success. The two nearly came to blows, but security held them back. Christopher Daniels stepped in, assuring Page that he knew who he was.

  • The OPPS (Samoa Joe, Katsuyori Shibata & HOOK) def. The Patriarchy (Christian Cage, Nick Wayne & Kip Sabian)
Shibata and Samoa Joe dominated early, chopping their opponents down. Hook cleaned house, locking Wayne in Red Rum for the submission victory. After the match, it was announced that MJF vs. Hangman Page was official for AEW Revolution.

  • Chris Jericho issues a challenge to Bandido
Jericho declared that AEW wouldn’t exist without him and announced that Bandido, who defeated him in Australia, would get a shot at the ROH World Championship this Saturday on Collision.

  • Street Fight: Powerhouse Hobbs def. Big Bill
The two brawled around ringside, using weapons, including a wrench and a trash can. Hobbs slammed Bill onto the stage, then knocked him off the steel steps and through barbed wire-wrapped tables, winning via ten count.

  • Toni Storm issues an open challenge
Storm gloated about defeating Mariah May, then declared she was ready for any challenger, calling out Kris Statlander, Willow Nightingale, and even legendary names like Wendy Richter.

  • Kris Statlander vs. Megan Bayne ends in chaos
Statlander had the upper hand until Penelope Ford interfered, shoving her off the top rope. Bayne capitalized, hitting an F5 for the biggest win of her AEW career. Thunder Rosa ran down with a chair, but the referee prevented her from attacking Ford and Bayne.

  • Ricochet refuses to return Jimmy Rave’s robe
Ricochet mocked the AEW fans and declared that he would soon be a champion. Prince Nana asked him to return the stolen robe, but Ricochet refused, taunting Nana before walking off.

  • AEW Revolution International Championship Series: Orange Cassidy def. Roderick Strong
Strong controlled much of the match, but Cassidy countered a Sick Kick with a Stun Dog Millionaire and followed up with the Orange Punch for the win. With this victory, Cassidy will face Konosuke Takeshita next week, with the winner earning a shot at Kenny Omega at Revolution.

  • Chaos erupts between Omega, Takeshita, and Orange Cassidy
After Cassidy’s victory, Don Callis interrupted, leading to Mark Davis attacking Cassidy. Kenny Omega ran out to even the odds, but Takeshita took him down with an elbow strike. Omega eventually fought back, standing tall while holding Takeshita’s championship.

WWE

Ricky Starks, now known as Ricky Saints in WWE NXT, opened up about his new name and its connection to his hometown of New Orleans. "It's just a throwback to...it's not even a throwback because the New Orleans Saints are still around," Saints said. "But Saints in itself is pretty indicative of New Orleans regardless... And I mean, it's as close as you're going to get to Starks...it's going to take time for them [the fans] to get used to it, and I respect that they care so deeply about me that they rebel against the name change. But at the same time, I am a product of New Orleans, first and foremost. And I want to pay respect to that as well. And so, that's what it was."

AEW

AEW officials are reportedly pleased with how AEW Collision: Grand Slam Australia performed in the ratings, despite airing nearly three hours later than usual due to the NBA All-Star Weekend. "According to Fightful Select, AEW averaged around 500,000 viewers for the show, and that's without AEW viewership numbers on Max available." Given the circumstances, AEW views this as a strong result.

Bully Ray didn’t hold back when discussing AEW’s struggles in recent years, stating that Cody Rhodes’ exit was the turning point. 🤝 Adam Cole on AEW Post-Match Hug with Malakai Black: “A Cool Moment with a Friend”

After his match against Malakai Black, Adam Cole shared a moment with his opponent that caught fans’ attention. Addressing speculation, Cole explained, “I do have a history of working with Malakai. Just an unbelievable opponent, an unbelievable guy to step in there with, and we’ve shared a lot of really cool moments together. So for me, all it was, was this personal moment between two guys who have a lot of love and respect for each other. I don’t know anything about or didn’t know anything about what his plans were and things like that. For me, it was just a cool moment with a friend after getting to work together after a long time.”
