Cactus Jack’s Legendary Retirement Match at No Way Out

(Great body building pose 🤣)

25 years ago today, WWE No Way Out took place at the Hartford Civic Center in Hartford, Connecticut, featuring one of the most emotional moments in WWE history—the retirement of Cactus Jack (Mick Foley).

In the night’s brutal Hell in a Cell main event, Triple H defended the WWE Championship against Cactus Jack, with the stipulation that if Foley lost, he would be forced to retire. After an intense battle that saw Jack take one of his signature death-defying falls through the cell, Triple H secured the victory, seemingly ending Foley’s in-ring career. However, Foley’s "retirement" was short-lived, as he returned less than a month later to compete in the main event of WrestleMania 2000. This event was a pivotal moment in Attitude Era history, setting the stage for WrestleMania 2000 and cementing Triple H’s dominance as WWE’s top heel.

AEW Dynamite aired live from Frontwave Arena in Oceanside, CA, on TBS and streamed on MAX, featuring major rivalries heating up ahead of Revolution.

Hangman Adam Page def. Aaron Solo. Page wasted no time, demolishing Solo with a Buckshot Lariat for the quick victory. After the match, Page demanded MJF be dragged to the ring for a fight. MJF appeared with a bloody towel, taunting Page and revealing that Christopher Daniels had been attacked backstage. Page stormed to the back with a steel chair in pursuit of MJF.

Will Ospreay def. Bryan Keith in a Bounty Match. Ospreay sealed the win with a Style Clash and a Hidden Blade. After the match, he charged toward the skybox where Don Callis was watching, but Kyle Fletcher intercepted him, sparking a brawl that had to be broken up by security.

The Outrunners def. The Murder Machines (Lance Archer & Brian Cage). The Murder Machines dominated the match, but interference from The Hurt Syndicate distracted Archer, allowing Turbo Floyd to roll him up for a shocking upset.

Swerve Strickland & Ricochet Segment. Swerve called out Ricochet, demanding another match. Ricochet initially declined, stating he had moved on, but Prince Nana revealed that Tony Khan had sanctioned a rematch at Revolution, with the winner earning a shot at the AEW World Championship. Ricochet accepted, making the match official.

Hangman Adam Page Backstage Interview. Page vowed to find MJF and promised that when he did, MJF would regret every decision leading up to Revolution.

Adam Cole, Kyle O’Reilly & Roderick Strong def. Daniel Garcia & FTR in a Trios Match. Cole scored the victory for The Undisputed Kingdom by pinning Garcia after a jackknife cover. It was later announced that Cole would challenge Garcia for the TNT Championship this Saturday on Collision.

Backstage Brawl: Cope, Claudio Castagnoli & Jay White. Claudio and Wheeler Yuta ambushed Cope, attempting to take him out with a con-chair-to before Jay White intervened. The chaos ended with Cope smashing Claudio with a con-chair-to while Willow Nightingale took out Marina Shafir with a chair shot of her own.

Harley Cameron def. Deonna Purrazzo. Cameron scored an upset win over Deonna with a shining wizard knee strike after surviving a brutal powerbomb.

Konosuke Takeshita def. Orange Cassidy in a Revolution International Championship Series Match. Cassidy fought through Takeshita’s relentless offense and landed a Beach Break on the announce table, followed by an Orange Punch. However, Takeshita countered Cassidy’s last attempt and secured the win with the Raging Fire. With this victory, it was confirmed that Takeshita will face Kenny Omega at Revolution.

Coming back in NXT, making our debut, wrestling on live television — it was an absolute honor, an absolute blast. Thank you for having us," Matt Hardy said.

Chris Jericho shared his pride in AEW’s rapid growth, specifically highlighting their massive television deal. "$185 Million a year for our new television contract, for a company that's barely six years old, that doesn't happen," Jericho said. "I can't think of another company in any genre that was able to get those types of numbers from a contract, so just to see how much we've been able to grow it."

________

Following speculation about tensions in the AEW women’s division, Thunder Rosa set the record straight, dismissing any rumors of backstage drama. "There is no drama," Rosa said. "We were all talking...we were all talking and praising each other. We're trying to be as positive as possible... And I'm telling you, it was a positive thing. There's nobody trying to kill each other. None of that stuff. There's no point. Again, it's like 'How are we going to grow if we're fighting?' Mistakes are made. It happened. We have to grow, and we talked, and it was fine."
