🗓️ On This Day in WWE – Guess the Moment from May 15, 2001

Let’s try something new (again)! When I first started Morning Dirt Sheet, the “On This Day” section was actually a trivia game. I’m bringing that back today to see what you all think. Here’s today’s question…

📝 On the final SmackDown before Judgment Day 2001, a top WWE superstar wrestled The Undertaker to a no-contest in the main event. Just six days later, during a tag team match on Raw, he suffered a devastating quadriceps tear that would sideline him for the rest of the year—marking his last SmackDown appearance for eight months.

🤔 Can you name the wrestler who got injured?

AEW Beach Break Dynamite Results - May 14th, 2025

AEW Dynamite

AEW Dynamite: Beach Break aired live from the NOW Arena in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, delivering a night of chaos, faction warfare, and a bloody steel cage battle. MJF officially joined the Hurt Syndicate, Jon Moxley retained the AEW World Championship with surprise help, and Swerve Strickland declared war in the name of anarchy.

Hangman Page & Will Ospreay def. The Don Callis Family. Page and Ospreay worked seamlessly early on, but subtle tension between the two simmered throughout the match. After a flurry of tandem offense, the duo weathered a brutal stretch from Takeshita and Alexander, including a terrifying landing on a Blue Thunder Bomb and multiple near-falls. A brief miscommunication nearly led to disaster, but Page and Ospreay recovered to hit a Hidden Blade/Buckshot combo for the win. Post-match, Takeshita attacked both men, and in the chaos, Ospreay accidentally nailed Page with a rolling elbow, escalating their growing friction.

Ricochet def. Zach Gowen. Ricochet mocked Gowen’s disability throughout the match, but Gowen fired back with high-risk offense and a near-fall after blasting Ricochet with his prosthetic leg. Ricochet survived the scare and ended it with a running palm strike. After the bell, Ricochet continued the assault until Mark Briscoe made the save.

MJF aligned with the Hurt Syndicate. In a backstage interview, MJF said he wanted his Triple B back and hinted that he was in talks with MVP’s group. By the end of the night, MVP, Shelton Benjamin, and Bobby Lashley each gave a thumbs up—officially welcoming MJF into the faction.

The Hurt Syndicate def. Top Flight to retain the AEW World Tag Team Championship. Top Flight started hot, but Lashley and Benjamin used their power to dominate. Dante’s late flurry was cut off with a Hurt Lock from Lashley, who refused to release the hold even after the bell. Dustin Rhodes and Sammy Guevara confronted them, prompting a match setup against CRU.

Mina Shirakawa def. Toni Storm, AZM, and Skye Blue. Mina pinned Storm in a fast-paced four-way match filled with strikes, suplexes, and quick reversals. Post-match, Mercedes Moné attacked AZM until Jamie Hayter ran her off. Mina vs. Storm was made official for Double or Nothing.

A tribute video aired for the late Sabu. Taz praised Sabu’s intensity, innovation, and legacy, calling him “a machine” who was “aura before aura was aura.”

Daniel Garcia challenged FTR. Garcia rejected Nigel McGuinness' apology and invited him to team up against FTR. Big Stokely Hathaway interrupted and warned of consequences. FTR jumped Garcia and Nigel until Daddy Magic made the save with a tire iron.

Jon Moxley def. Samoa Joe to retain the AEW World Championship in a steel cage match. Both men bled and battered each other in a brutal fight. Interference from the Death Riders and Gabe Kidd—who handed Moxley a briefcase—allowed the champion to steal the win.

The Elite trapped Kenny Omega inside the cage. After the match, Omega returned but was ambushed by Okada, thrown into the ring, and locked inside the cage with the Death Riders and Young Bucks. After a brutal beatdown, Swerve Strickland made a surprise save, hitting a top-rope Swerve Stomp off the cage and chasing off the attackers.

Swerve Strickland announced Anarchy in the Arena. Swerve declared he fears nothing and is the most dangerous man in AEW. He closed the show by announcing that Anarchy in the Arena is returning at Double or Nothing.

🗓️ On This Day in WWE – May 15th, 2001 – The Answer

Triple H’s Final SmackDown Before Injury Sidelines Him for 8 Months

24 years ago today, WWE aired the final SmackDown before Judgment Day 2001 from Louisville, Kentucky. In the main event, Triple H battled The Undertaker to a no-contest in a chaotic showdown that previewed their coming clash at the pay-per-view. What fans didn’t know at the time was that this would be Triple H’s final appearance on SmackDown for nearly eight months.

Just six days later, during a tag team match on Raw in San Jose, Triple H would suffer a devastating quadriceps tear—an injury that required surgery and forced him to miss the rest of 2001. His absence reshaped WWE’s main event scene heading into the Invasion angle and beyond.

Hard to believe WWE's most dominant heel of 2000 was gone in a flash—this SmackDown ended up being a quiet farewell before one of wrestling’s most iconic comeback stories… Also, Undertaker always had the coolest entrances 🏍️
