Mick Foley Loses His Ear in a Match Against Vader

31 years ago today, Mick Foley (wrestling as Cactus Jack) suffered one of the most infamous in-ring injuries in wrestling history, losing his ear during a match with Big Van Vader in Munich, Germany.

During the match, Foley was caught in the Hangman maneuver, where a wrestler's head is trapped between the ropes. However, WCW’s ring ropes were elevator cables wrapped in tape and had been tightened excessively earlier in the night. As Foley struggled to free himself, he felt the pressure cutting off his circulation and feared he was about to pass out. When he finally forced his way out, a sharp pain shot through his head—his ear was nearly severed.

Back in the ring, after a few more stiff shots from Vader, the ear detached completely. The referee, unable to speak English, picked up the ear and handed it to the ring announcer, who then passed it backstage to Ric Flair (the booker that night). Though Flair put the ear on ice, it was never reattached.

This moment became part of Foley’s hardcore legacy, further cementing his reputation as one of wrestling’s toughest competitors.
