WrestleMania XX Brings Iconic Moments and Controversial Matches to Madison Square Garden
21 years ago today, WWE WrestleMania XX took place at Madison Square Garden in New York City, featuring a four-and-a-half-hour spectacle in front of 20,000 fans, with 885,000 more watching on pay-per-view. The event was filled with historic moments, legendary returns, and one of the most infamous matches in WWE history.
John Cena kicked off his WrestleMania legacy by defeating The Big Show for the United States Championship, while Evolution (Randy Orton, Batista, and Ric Flair) overcame The Rock ānā Sock Connection, marking The Rockās last match until 2011. Eddie Guerrero retained the WWE Championship against Kurt Angle by loosening his boot to escape the Ankle Lock and rolling Angle up for the win. The Undertaker returned to his Deadman persona for the first time since 1999, defeating Kane to extend his streak to 12-0. In the main event, Chris Benoit won the World Heavyweight Championship by forcing Triple H to submit in a triple-threat match also involving Shawn Michaelsāthe first WrestleMania main event to end by submissionābefore celebrating in the ring with Guerrero in an emotional closing moment.
However, the most infamous match of the night saw Goldberg defeat Brock Lesnar, with Stone Cold Steve Austin as the special guest referee. Since both Goldberg and Lesnar were leaving WWE after the show, the crowd turned on them, relentlessly chanting āYou sold outā and āThis match sucksā throughout. The loudest cheers came after the matchāwhen Austin hit both men with Stunners to send the crowd home happy.

The Rock stated "Grateful for whatās been the most creatively inspiring time of my career - working closely with my friends and of course, the maestro Marty Scorsese," The Rock stated. "In the 60ās, 70ās & 80ās the mafia controlled New York, Miami, Chicago, Vegas, and a particularly strong hold on the island I was raised - Hawaii."
𩹠JD McDonagh Offers Recovery Update After Scary Table Spot Injury. JD McDonagh provided an update on his recovery after suffering a brutal injury from a table spot. "Time heals all," McDonagh said. "I wasn't like this the first week or two after but I'm feeling a lot better now. [I'm feeling] pretty good. My lungs are good. My ribs are good. I'm just kind of waiting for the bones to knit back together before they clear me."
š Report: WWE Targeting Top Free Agent Jeff Cobb. WWE is reportedly interested in signing Jeff Cobb, a former NEVER Openweight Champion, who previously turned down an offer to join NJPW. According to Fightful Select, one WWE source claimed Cobb is already listed on the internal roster, but this has yet to be confirmed. AEW sources reportedly do not expect him to sign with them.
š Nikki Bella Says Sheās Returning to WWE for a Future Project. Nikki Bella revealed she plans to return to WWE in some capacity, though details remain unclear. "I know at one point, I will be going back to WWE to do something. I donāt know when, I donāt know the story, but itās going to happen."
