Collision in Korea Shatters Attendance Records

30 years ago today, WCW and NJPW held the first night of the infamous Collision in Korea event at May Day Stadium in Pyongyang, North Korea. Local authorities claimed 150,000 fans attended night one, making it the largest wrestling crowd in history at that time. The main event saw Shinya Hashimoto and Scott Norton battle to a 20-minute time limit draw for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship, with Muhammad Ali in attendance as the guest of honor.

Night two would go on to break the record again, with a reported 190,000 fans attending. In the headline bout, Antonio Inoki defeated Ric Flair, after Hulk Hogan had declined to participate. Other major names who competed at the historic event included 2 Cold Scorpio, Chris Benoit (as Wild Pegasus), Road Warrior Hawk, Scott Norton, and the Steiner Brothers.

The event remains one of the few WCW pay-per-views not available on the WWE Network and was profiled in Vice TV’s Dark Side of the Ring in 2021.
